Target Audience

i have a large target audience, the reason for this is because the genre action/thriller doesn't have a specific age or gender that it is aimed at and is usually welcomed by many people and a wide audience. because of this i can not talk about a specific audience i just have to make it appeal to as many people as possible. i think that the younger generation, 18-24 year olds will really like this film because of the action that it has but also people above that age may be interested in the story line and come and watch it because of that.

Evaluation

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product develops and challenges of real media products. Ways in which we developed are that the music we used was very fast paced. And this suits us well because our genre is a action/thriller and is also very fast paced. We also used slower more intense music and this helped to create an eerie and scary atmosphere which is very stereotypical of a thriller.

We had many different camera shots and editing techniques which helped us to keep with the genre conventions. We used many angled shots to show who had the power in certain parts of the film and also had many close-ups which helped us express the characters emotions on there face. With the editing we wanted fast pace action to keep with the conventions of the genre, so to do this during the chase scenes we used quick and fast camera shots from different angles and distances and this gave the trailer a fast pace. We had a dilemma at one point because we had to show the audience that a certain part of the trailer was from a different time, and we struggled to come up with ways to show this. In the end we had the idea of editing the scene black and white and add a caption and this would make it obvious to the audience and will also build up the story of our film well.

We used many conventions from the thriller/action genre to help us in our trailer. such as the chase scenes and weapons being used, we also followed conventions such as hero and villain balance and how the film starts in equilibrium and the goes into disequilibrium then once again back to equilibrium.

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?

Our main media products have a very good link with the ancillary text that we have. We wanted to make our poster and magazine front cover so that you knew straight away they were from the same film, so to do this we had to come up with a very strong link between them. We first came up with the colour scheme of black, red and orange throughout all our media products, I believe the colours are very important to see a link throughout our media products. We used this colour scheme because the colour ‘red’ suggests danger and action, therefore it would suit our thriller well. we also used a freeze frame from our film trailer and used that for our magazine front cover and poster, this is because people will know our character really well and they will know what film he will be from straight away.

3) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Audience feedback is very important in media because it is them that you are trying to attract to your media product, therefore every suggestion they make must be taken very seriously. It was very important that they recognise that the genre was thriller, because if they did not we would have been attracting the wrong audience. They stated that the fact that there is a lot action and chase scenes suggested that it was a thriller, also they said that the music was fast paced and suited the action very well. The music they said blended very well with the changing shots and they liked the way in which they complemented each other very well. also they liked the way in which we used the captions because they stated that it gave them a small inside to the story line and they would want to find out what happens and find out the answer to many other questions in which they had and therefore this would make them want to go and see our film. We had some negative feedback, mainly it was the fact that when one song stops and another starts, it does not sound right. In our audience feedback many people said that they reckon if we had a pause and then someone in our trailer say something, then the music start again. We took this into consideration and tried this method to see what it would be like but unfortunately it was not very good. So we ended up cutting the two bits of music so it fitted better, I still would have preferred to find another method to resolve this matter but the others in my group disagreed.

4) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

i used many different types of media for my work. in the research i used youtube a lot. this is a website in which i watched videos off trailers and then analysed them. i had to then put the videos on to my blog and i didn't know how to do this, i then learnt about how to use the embedding code to copy and past it across and now i know how to do that. i also used google images to get images of posters and film magazines which i had to evaluate as well.

i learnt how to use a video recorder and learnt different methods to hold a good frame, some methods very unorthodox which involve tying a rope from my foot to the camera and pulling tight. i learnt how to record and then put them on a Apple Mac.

when it came to making our trailer i knew very very little about how to use Adobe Premier Pro, but i followed a video in how to use it and from that i taught myself and got better and better the more i used it. when i first used it i was very slow at using it and towards the end i was very fast, i think the speed in which i worked complimented the progress i made in learning how to use Adobe Premier Pro. i also learnt last year during the AS project how to use photoshop and i had to use them skills to make our film magazine cover and our poster, because of the year experience i handled this very well.

Audience Feedback

when we showed our trailer to an audience via facebook, we got mostly good responses but there were also bad responses. the good responses stated that the film suited the genre well and looked very entertaining. the captions we had left the audience asking us questions which is a sign that they are interested in the film. however we had some bad response such as the fact the villain and victim once loved each other then want to kill each other is to far fetched, also some people say that the films story line is to predictable in which the victim survives at the villains cost.

Magazine Research

in our group we had to come up with a magazine name. we had thought long for a suitable title which would grab peoples attention and in the end we came up with three diffrent possibilities which where 'your films', 'lights, camera, action' and 'showtime' after talking and getting audience feedback we felt that 'showtime' would be best.

Editing Process

this here is the screen of Adobe Premier Pro. down the left column is a list of all different scenes that we have filmed. the screen on the top right shows us each individual section of footage and on the screen on the right is the edited footage we can take. below both the screens is the timeline and we can order in what each piece of footage is played and at what time.

we started by uploading all of our footage that we had filmed from the recorder to the Apple Mac and then we put it into Adobe Premier Pro. once we had done this we would be able to watch each scene and decided what was good and what was bad. we was then able to delete all of the bad bits of footage that we would not use.

we would have one piece of footage at a time and we would use the cutting tool to cut the footage to the right size and how we liked and we then linked it to other scenes. we edited the scenes to go together well so that the trailer would have a professional look to it. we would then have to put it all in the right order so that the trailer can be made.

once all the footage was in place it was time to bring in the music. to do that we had to use a website to change the songs to the right format to use with Adobe Premier Pro, and once this was done we had to put the tense music with the tense scenes and the fast paced music with the fast paced editing. once this was done we had our film trailer complete.

Initial designs

Analysis of magazine covers

the magazine here is 'Total Film'. as you can see the main movie which is being reviewed is 'Shutter Island' and its picture is taking up the whole of the magazine cover. the main colour scheme being used in the image is blue, therefore everything else is in a big red font or red boxes. still though the main USP is the image stating that this is a special image on 'Shutter Island'.
the image continues to go over the masterhead of the magazine but not over the other contents which are in the magazine. this shows us that the magazine still wants to show off what else it has inside of the magazine.

Analysis of film posters

this here is a very simple yet very effective film poster. we can very clearly see the film title and the main character of the film in this poster. this is something that we would like to do also on ours because we want it very effective and eye catching. we can see the character is wearing a suit and this shows that he has power and also he is holding a gun which shows danger and from this we can distinguish that this is a action genre film. the colour scheme is very basic and even dull, but i think this is used so you will concentrate more on the character and his gun. it also has a date when the film will be released and a website, we will need to include these in our poster. it also has the names of the companies which were used to make and produce this film, this is another factor we must include when it comes to making our poster.

Re-shooting

we had to re-shoot a part of the film that we did not like. the first part we shot was when the boss gives the villain orders, the first time was not good enough because we did not symbolise that the boss had the power very well, so therefore we re-shot. the second scene we re-did was when two characters were talking in front of a big green wall, this was just by coincidence and we did not want to send of wrong signals so we re-shot this scene to wearing the same clothes and using the same speech.

Initial ideas - characters

in our trailer we have continued to use the conventional thriller/action convention by having one main villain and one main victim. we believe that this will keep things simple and be more effective. we also believe it will help the audience understand what genre our trailer is better. however we will also have another two characters in this film. one of these characters will be the villains boss and he will be giving out the orders to kill people, and our other character will be assisting the victim in her struggle to survive.

characters
victim - she will be wearing casual clothes to show that there is no real importance to her and that she is just a general women. we have not followed the conventions by using a man also for a victim because we wanted the audience to feel that the women we used is more vulnerable and weaker than a man would be in the situation to add to the suspense.

victims assistant - he will be the strengh behind the victim and will help her escape. we want to give off the image that he himself has a 'bad' side to him but is putting it to good use and therefore we may have a shot of him smoking to show this.

villain - the villain will be in a all black smart suit, the all dark is to have a sense of mystery to him that people wont understand. the suit is to show that he has high power over the victim as well. through parts of the trailer he will have a knife and gun which shows that he will kill people and that he is dangerous.

villains boss - he will also be in a suit to show his power and he will always be sitting in his office barking demands to the villain which shows he is also more powerful than him.

Choosing music for our trailer

for our music we will have three different tracks. the first track will be slow paced, the second will be slightly faster but still tense and the third will be very fast paced which will suit action.

this will be our first piece of music, will we only use it from 1 minuet 49 seconds onwards because we believe that the heartbeat will be very tense and can create a good atmosphere for a thriller. at this point in our trailer we will have slow editing.

this here will be our second track. at this point our trailer will be getting slightly faster and you can here that this track is also faster than the one we used before but it still Carry's the element of suspense in it.

near the end of the trailer we will use this track which is fast paced and can keep up with the fast pace of action that we will be having in our trailer at this point. i be live that it will go very well with the chase scenes near the end of our trailer.

Initial ideas for own video

settings
for our own video will we have the setting in diffrent locations, mainly in a forest and on streets. we will have it in the forest because this will give the feeling that our charector will be isolated and can not get help from anyone because there is no one around. it also gives off the feeling to the audience that they are trapped and this is also a conventional location for a thriller. the streets will be a location to make the film have a feeling of realism and reality, and we will need this if we want to make a connection with our audience.

Mise-en-scene
we will have our charectors with knifes, this way we can show to the audince that there will be violence and action in our film which matches our genre. we will also have the victim in casuel clothes and our killer in a suit, this is to help the audince understasnd thaat our killer is a higher in power and shows her weakness to him. we will have a forest to help get the feel for isolation to which will build a tense atmosphere.

sound effects and music
we will have two main diffrent styles of music in our trailer to help show the genre, we will first use a heartbeat sound effect which will go into music, this is to creat a very tense and intimidating atmosphere for the audince. we will also use fast paced music to keep up with the action and fast paced edeting of our trailer.

dialogue
we plan on not using to much dialogue because we want the music to control the pace of our trailer, however we will use small amounts of dialogue so that it will help the audience understand the story of our film and trailer.

editing and camera angles
we will use many diffrent camera angles throughout the trailer, but one style we have decided to keep throughout the trailer, and that is that it is a low angle shot of the killer throughout, to help show that he has the power. we will use high angle shots for the victim to show that she is weak in comparison. we will also show close ups on peoples faces so that people can see there expressions so that we can show what the emotions that they have, like fear or stress for example.
for editing we cam up with the idea of the trailer starting slower and building up pace as it goes along, this will ease the audince into our trailer better. we are going to start off our trailer slower and making it very tense and then we will change the pace and make it fast with a lot of quick changes in camera angles and shots.

Reaction from pitch

We presented our pitch to our media class so that we could get their feedback to make our trailer as best as it could be. They had very positive thoughts about it and liked the unconventional idea of possibly having a woman assassin. However, they did suggest that we watched the film 'Salt' as they felt that this film could assist with the construction of our trailer.

Pitch

Deception

Focused Analysis - Locations

i looked at a trailer of 'Shutter Island' and the location that it is set. the first thing you find out from the trailer is that it is set on an island, this makes the audience feel isolated from any help if they would need it on the island and sets up a thriller/horror genre. you then find out that the only thing that is on the island is a mental institution for the criminally insane. from this information alone you know that the film will be a thriller and that it will be a very scary and tense because if anything bad was to happen they would be isolated on the island. because of this it would make the audience feel as if they are isolated as well and stuck on that island which is what will attract the horror and thriller audience to this film.

Focused Analysis - Mise-en-scene

i watched the trailer from the film 'Green Zone' and in this film the mise-en-scene give away a big part of what genre the film is in the trailer. near the start of the trailer there are many guns going off and this shows us that there is much action in the film. it also lets people know early that this is a action film. there are also many military cars and helicopters which shows that the action is properly related to a war that is going on. this can show the audience what type of film that this is going to be which means this trailer can target its audience very well.

Focused Analysis - Sound

i looked at the quantum of solace trailer, and at the start of the trailer the music is very tense, this suits the genre of a thriller. it starts with people talking about disturbing issues they have and the more and more they talk the more the music is dramatic, especially when there are flashbacks from there memory there is a big bang which can make the audience feel very tense. but when the trailer starts to show lots of action the music changes and is very fast and this suits the pace of the editing in the trailer. it also suits the action genre very well and they both compliment each other well.
